I still vividly recall my days as a young art student, filled with dreams and the naive belief that being an artist was all about creating in the studio, with everything else magically falling into place.
But reality hit hard after I earned my MFA in Chicago. To make ends meet, I took a full-time job in marketing and design. Days turned into months, and my creative energy was drained by a job that had nothing to do with my art. Weekends were my only time to create, and even then, exhaustion often won. I felt stuck—creatively, emotionally, and financially.
I remember sitting at my desk one night, looking at my unfinished paintings and wondering if I had made a mistake pursuing art. That’s when something shifted. After deep conversations with my wife, we decided I had two choices: keep going through the motions or take a bold risk and fully commit to my art.
It wasn’t easy. I faced sleepless nights, moments of deep self-doubt, and more than one near-failure. But that leap led me to open 33 Contemporary Gallery in 2004, become the curator of the Zhou B Art Center by 2010, and work with artists around the world.
In 2015, Dr. Yanina and I realized something powerful—so many artists were stuck, just like I had been. We wanted to share what we’d learned, not just about the business of art, but about the mental game, the creative process, and the emotional rollercoaster artists face. That’s why we created ArtNXTLevel®—to help artists find freedom, fulfillment, and success on their own terms.
