How Can You Read My Mind Dr. Gomez?

“I love to create, it’s my passion! But, once I finish my piece or series, I have a hard time speaking concisely about it. I just don’t feel comfortable talking about it let alone being concise.”

How can you read my mind Dr. Gomez? Yes, that’s one of my hidden talents ~ reading minds through screens! On a more serious note, if this is you, you’re not alone. Throughout the years, I’ve met quite a few artists with similar struggles. I call it the “I have a hard time speaking about my work” syndrome.

So, here are 3 suggestions to beat this crazy I-call-it-syndrome and ease the stress associated with it:

1. NO ONE knows your artwork better than you do. By default, it makes you the expert! I think that, as long as you talk about your work in an authentic and truthful manner, you will give people reasons to identify and connect with it. After all, no one can argue with you about what you say about your work. They might disagree with your views, message or style… So, what?

2. Document your thoughts, feelings, ideas, techniques, etc… whatever comes to mind while you’re creating. Write it down before you begin creating, as you’re creating and/or after you’re done for the day. Whenever ideas are flowing. Maybe you can audio or video record your reflections/reactions/process, etc. As ideas/reflections come to mind, record them. Use your phone (voice memo apps). Make it an audio or video journal so you can refer to it at a later time.

3. Create an outline with main points. Why does your work should matter to me (the viewer)? What is its essence and/or technique? Use the notes and reflections you’ve documented to help you answer these questions. This can help you organize your thoughts, ease stress and have a flow during conversations.

So here they are, my 3 suggestions to deal with the “I have a hard time speaking about my work” syndrome. So, what has been your #1 strategy to help you talk about your work in a way that makes sense? Share your comments below!

As always, artists who maintain an optimal wholeness balance (mind, body & soul) will be ahead of the game!
